Recovery of the European construction sector is leading to labour shortage
In most European countries the construction sector is growing and so are the construction volumes (current & the near future). As a consequence, a large majority of European architects are expecting a quantitative and qualitative labour shortage.
Currently, more and more architects are experiencing a shortage of labour, especially when compared to previous years. In the UK and Germany a big increase in quantitative labour shortage is experienced by the architects in the past 12 months. In France, Italy, Belgium and Poland the situation is similar (but with lower %). Spanish and Dutch architects experience quantitative labour shortages as less of a problem.
When we look at the qualitative labour shortages, the situation is similar to the quantitative labour shortages mentioned above. However, architects clearly see and experience qualitative labour shortage as larger problem. For example, although quantitative labour shortage is less of a problem in Spain and the Netherlands, qualitative labour shortage is. France and Italy jump out as countries with the largest problems regarding qualitative labour shortages (much lower levels are reported for quantitative labour shortages.
According to a study commissioned by the European parliament published in March 2015 there is a strong correlation between the economic recession, which was also seen in the construction sector, and labour shortage. Therefore the experience of the architects and expectations they have regarding the labour shortage in the next few years is again an indicator that the construction sector is recovering.
These and many other results and trends of the developments of the European construction market can be found in the European Architectural Barometer, an international market research conducted among 1,600 architects in Europe. This study is conducted in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland by Arch-Vision four times a year.
