Modular building products; Is there a trend?
When talking about construction trends, prefabrication and modular construction are almost always mentioned.
When talking about construction trends, prefabrication and modular construction are almost always mentioned. Big names like McDonalds are using a modular construction for their new UK restaurants. Google is building their new headquarters campus modular as well.
A lot has also been written about permanent modular building. We have seen an increase in companies that are opting for such a building method for their new buildings.
Of course, prefabrication and modular construction processes are not new at all, but are becoming more and more practical due to all of the new technologies at our disposal.
In our previous European architectural barometer reports, we have already seen that European architects underline the trend towards modular building. But what about modular building products? Do the European architects see a trend towards this as well?
The theme of the Q2 2016 report of the European architectural barometer is design and technology trends and 1 of the questions asked was: Is there a trend towards products (including flooring) to become more modular and easier to install by 1 or 2 persons.
The image above shows the results.
It’s interesting to see the differences between the different countries. France (55%), Italy (54%) and Belgium (53%) have the largest group of architects who believe that currently all products are becoming modular and requiring less people to install them. On the other hand, more than a quarter of Dutch, British and German architects think this will never happen.
