Almost half of the European HVAC installers and plumbers experience a lack of BIM knowledge and 27% of them expect that they will need to work in BIM
Almost half of the European HVAC installers and plumbers familiar with BIM (48%) do not have enough knowledge about BIM and their role in BIM. There is a more divided image when it comes to the installers’ perspective on the need to work in BIM. BIM has not been integrated in the work of the HVAC installers yet and this affects the level of knowledge and the need to work in BIM. These are some of the results of the Q1 2018 report of the European Mechanical Installation Monitor with the theme ‘The usage of calculation tools & Building Information Modelling’. This report is based on 1.002 successful interviews with HVAC installers and plumbers in six European countries.
Lack of knowledge about BIM and their role in BIM
Almost half (48%) of the European installers familiar with BIM indicate that they do not have enough knowledge about BIM and their role in BIM. Zooming in on the investigated countries, it is clear that Poland and the UK are the countries in which the highest share of the installers (61% in Poland and 57% in the UK) does not have enough knowledge. These shares are lower in other investigated countries, respectively - 26% in France, 46% in Belgium, 48% in Germany and the Netherlands.
Only 16% of the European HVAC installers and plumbers familiar with BIM admit to have enough knowledge about the BIM and their role in BIM. The highest shares of HVAC installers and plumbers who see their knowledge on the topic as sufficient can be found in France (21%), Poland (21%) and Germany (18%). The other countries follow with 13% in Belgium and the Netherlands and 12% in the UK. As a whole prevailing part of the installers in each country lack BIM knowledge.
“Installers do not need to work with BIM”
“HVAC installers and plumbers do not need to work in BIM, as they just have to install the HVAC systems according to the drawings.” USP Marketing Consultancy asked the installers whether they agree or disagree with this statement.
38% of the European installers agree with that statement and 27% of the European installers disagree with this statement. More than half of the installers in Germany (59%) and the United Kingdom (52%) clearly indicate they do not need to work in BIM, as they just have to install the HVAC systems according to the drawings. Poland takes the third place with 40% and there is a more divided image in Belgium (29% agree with the statement and 28% disagree with the statement).
French and Dutch installers are slightly more positive about working in BIM
Installers in France and the Netherlands are slightly more positive about working in BIM. There is a relatively high share of French and Dutch HVAC installers and plumbers that see that working in BIM needs to be done. This is 43% in France and 41% in the Netherlands. One of the possible reasons for that is that BIM has really taken off in the construction sector in the past few years, which affects the usage of BIM in the installation sector as well. This is mostly due to the legislation around large projects that already need to be done in BIM in France.
Future of BIM in installation
BIM has not really been integrated in the work of the installers yet. In countries where BIM familiarity and usage is relatively low, there is also less need to work in BIM and installers clearly indicate there is a lack of knowledge. It is plausible that once there is an increase of knowledge of working in BIM and the demand for BIM projects takes off, BIM will be implemented in the work of installers more and more.
